English Major Program: Day, Night and Weekend College
Communication Program

This program provides students with a general course of study in English communication skills. Upon graduation students will be competent at an intermediate level of English. Emphasis is based on developing fluency in conversational English, increasing vocabulary, and improving usage of grammatical structures. Learning about the people and cultures of other cultures is also included in this major.

Test Requirements: Communications students are expected to pass the 2nd level of the STEP and to pass the TOEIC with a score of at least 500-550.

This new program offers adult students the opportunity to obtain a diploma in general English study after a year of full-time studying in the day-college program, at nights and on the weekends. Participants in this program and their reasons for getting the degree are varied. Some students plan to pursue education overseas, while others plan to use English in their jobs. Many students are recent junior college graduates who want to have a chance to improve their English before beginning work while other may be house wives or people in career transition periods and want to gain an edge in an ever-increasingly competitive business market. Students take a variety of specific skill classes (grammar, vocabulary), conversations classes and content-based classes (American Studies, Intercultural Communication, Philosophy, Business, Economics, to name a few).

Although many foreign students can achieve a high TOEFL score and gain admittanceinto a foreign university, they often fail as a result of being unprepared for the culture and practices of an American or British college. This program intensively prepares students for success in a foreign university. Emphasis is placed on improving critical thinking skills through the reading and discussion of controversial and contemporary topics through a variety of teaching methods. Students are expected to not only participate fully in all class discussions but also facilitate group debates. Specific academic skills, such as listening to lectures, note taking, testing and writing will be in-

depth taught.

Test Requirements: Students are expected to have a score of 550 on the TOEFL by graduation.

This program prepares students for living, working, studying or traveling in an English-speaking country. It is a comprehensive course which focuses on all skill areas of learning English. Cultural and practical aspects are emphasized to better prepare the sojourner for life overseas. A variety of elective courses have been designed to develop specific skills needed in the various overseas situations mentioned earlier.

Test Requirements: Students are expected to pass the 2nd level of the STEP exam. Though TOEFL score requirements vary from institution to institution in the US, a general score of at least 500 should be the goal of all Overseas students by the end of the second year.
